Hi, my name is Don Mac Kay.
As a Martial Artist for over 40 years and school owner for over 25 years I've seen to many great Martial Artists get burned out and bitter from the day to day grind of running a school.
And, it doesn’t have to be that way at all!
One of the trends I am noticing more and more these days, is an US verses THEM mindset. Let me explain. For the last several months I've become aware of a particular type of marketing strategy that attempts to put Martial Art School Owners who utilize proven systems to teach staff and students, use set curriculum, and have mandatory testing, AGAINST School Owners who feel uncomfortable with a School Owner being "too" successful. In fact, one common argument is that "new" successful School Owners should move away from using systems and strive to make a difference in their community. My experience as a School Owner and Martial Arts Business Coach has shown that an owner can do both.
Does the Industry need change? ABSOLUTELY! The homogenized approach adapted by school owners in the 80's and 90's is dated and was dictated by tuition collection companies who didn't care about the owner so much as how much revenue passed through the tuition company's hands.
Well, a School Owner can make a HUGE impact on their community, (and should) while utilizing systems that allow for a systematic experience, that generates high quality Black Belts, Certified Instructors and Students that understand and practice the role of a Leader.
